Thundering HERD Athlete Bio:

Michael Palmer

My name is Mike, and I am currently a commercial airline pilot flying international trips to Europe and Asia from my home in Chicago.  My early flying days were spent in the United States Marine Corps flying tactical aircraft at home and parts of the world far away.  It is a special thrill for this Marine to run in my service’s marathon.

When I learned about this opportunity to support such a great cause, it was an easy decision for me.  Though I had sworn off of doing another marathon a decade ago, there were just too many compelling reasons to pull out my running shoes and start training for one more.  CWA is such a worthy cause that I am honored to have been invited to participate.  My connection with Africa goes back many years to when I loaded up a backpack and boarded an airplane with no plans, no reservations, and very little knowledge of what would await me when I landed on the other side of the world.  That trip resonated with me as I met the people who accepted me so warmly and happily to a world so different than the one I grew up in.  I will always treasure the days I spent there, and look forward to doing my part to raise awareness and money for those who could use the boost.
